Once again, lower cost / higher deductible plans combined with a Health Savings Account help lower the cost of healthcare by inserting free-market forces. When a patient spends his or her own money they are much more inclined to ask about a generic alternative.

Pharmacies such as WalMart now have scores of generic medications available for $4.00 a month. Though some patients need specific, name-brand medications, many patients can be treated using older generic medications with equal effectiveness.

If patients and physicians consistently ask “Do we really need to use this medication?” and “Could we safely use a generic?” pharmaceutical costs could be lowered without legislative mandate or rationing.
